After reading hundreds of comments on my recent haversack challenge, one point kept coming up over and over again: a hip pack keeps your back cooler than a backpack.
That got me thinking. I’ve never been a fan of shoulder bags because they slide around every time I bend over. I prefer gear that stays put and moves with me, so I decided to build a survival-focused setup around the Grayl Mission EXP 4.5L Hip Pack.
In this video, I walk through the pack’s features, explain how I packed it without overloading it, and discuss the survival philosophy behind every item. This isn’t meant to replace a backpack or serve as a complete survival kit. Instead, it’s an extension of my everyday carry—a force multiplier that fills gaps in my survival priorities while remaining comfortable enough to wear all day.
The next step is putting it to the test. I’ll be taking this setup into the field to see how both the pack and my gear perform in a real survival challenge.
What would you add—or leave out? Let me know in the comments.
