I headed into the wilderness to film a fire craft video, but survival had other plans.
After stopping to collect and purify water with my Grayl, a sudden and intense toothache hit immediately. With temperatures hovering around 22°F, even breathing cold air caused pain. Heat and pressure weren’t the issue, this was something else, and I was miles from help.

In this video, I walk through how I managed a dental emergency in a survival scenario using what I had on hand:
• A tea bag to help draw out potential infection
• Ibuprofen and acetaminophen for pain management
• Orajel for topical relief
• Gum as a temporary barrier to protect the affected area
This impromptu situation turned into a real-world lesson on preparedness, improvisation, and why dental issues can become serious fast in the backcountry. I also touch on natural remedies—but ultimately, preparation is key.
Why waste a crisis? Sometimes the best lessons aren’t planned.
