I took four suppressed guns out back, shot every one of them on camera, and went down the five things people still get wrong about suppressors. Nobody paid to be in that video and none of the gear was given to me.
I expected the .308 to make the point about noise and the .22 to make the point about quiet. Both did. What I didn’t expect was how much the law would move while I planned the video. The fifth myth is the one to read even if you skip the rest.
Here’s what I shot. A .308 bolt action with a Division 3 hunting suppressor and 147 grain PMC supersonic ammo. A 300 Blackout AR pistol with an Aero Precision suppressor and 110 grain Hornady V-Max supersonic. A double folding AR-15 pistol with a Jager Defense Micro K and Mags And Co 62 grain 5.56 FMJ. And an M&P 15/22 AR pistol with a Division 3 OLVR and CCI standard velocity 40 grain subsonic .22. NOTE: There are links to everything below.
Three supersonic, one subsonic, on purpose.
MYTH 1: SUPPRESSORS SILENCE A GUNSHOT
A suppressor is a muffler. It traps the hot gas coming out of the muzzle and lets it out slower, and that’s the blast. The can handles the blast and nothing else.
It does nothing about the bullet. A supersonic bullet breaks the sound barrier and makes its own crack all the way down range. The action makes noise too. On the bolt gun you hear the bolt. On an AR you hear the carrier slam home.
The numbers are plain. A good can takes somewhere around 20 to 35 decibels off the top. An unsuppressed rifle runs about 165 decibels and up, and anything over 140 can damage your hearing with one shot. So a suppressed .308 is quieter, but it’s still a rifle going off.
That’s what I felt on the .308. The blast was gone from my face. The crack was still there and I could feel the bolt in my hand.
MYTH 2: SUPPRESSORS ARE ILLEGAL, OR ONLY CRIMINALS USE THEM
Both wrong. Suppressors are legal for civilians in most states and you buy one at a gun store. The people who actually use them are hunters, ranchers, instructors and guys who don’t want the neighbors to hate them. A hunter with a can keeps his hearing and doesn’t spook every animal in the county.
Nobody is sneaking around with one of these. Look at the size of the thing.
The 300 Blackout with the Aero Precision can made the handling point for me. The gun is front heavy with the can on and there’s more gas in your face than the bolt gun. That’s a short gas gun doing what short gas guns do.
The one real catch is the state line. Read your own state’s law before you buy.
MYTH 3: YOU NEED SUBSONIC AMMO OR THE CAN IS USELESS
No. Supersonic through a can still kills the muzzle blast, the flash and most of the concussion. The concussion is the part that hurts you and the guy standing next to you. What you keep is the crack.
Subsonic trades energy for quiet. A subsonic round stays under about 1,100 feet per second, so there’s no crack to keep.
I ran the comparison with the mic in one spot. The 300 Blackout supersonic, then the 15/22 subsonic. The .22 was the closest thing to quiet on the table. Small case, slow bullet, and a .22 action doesn’t slam like an AR.
Run supersonic when you need the energy and subsonic when you need quiet. Neither one is silent.
MYTH 4: A SUPPRESSOR WRECKS ACCURACY, VELOCITY AND RELIABILITY
Accuracy first. Your point of impact moves a little when you put the can on. It moves once and it stays there. Zero with the can on and you’re done.
Velocity. A can doesn’t slow the bullet down.
Reliability. When a gas gun runs dirty or runs hard with a can on, that’s gas, not the can. Suppressors push more gas and fouling back into a direct impingement AR. An adjustable gas block or a heavier buffer fixes it.
The double folding AR pistol with the Jager Defense Micro K ran its full string. There was more gas back at me than the 300 Blackout, and that’s the nature of a short 5.56. If your AR runs ugly suppressed, fix the gas before you blame the can.

MYTH 5: THE WIN ON THE TAX STAMP IS PERMANENT
This is the one that matters most right now.
Here’s how we got here. On January 1, 2026 the 200 dollar tax on suppressors went to zero dollars. On August 5, 2026 a federal judge in Texas ruled in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF that with no tax, the government has no grounds to run NFA registration on these items. That ruling covered only the people in the lawsuit, Gun Owners of America members included.
On October 9, 2026 the Justice Department said it wouldn’t appeal. The same day the ATF put out an open letter applying the same treatment to everybody. The ATF’s own words were that the narrower court order created inequity and disuniformity, and that it would use enforcement discretion to apply the same treatment nationwide.
So as of today, federally, you buy a suppressor the way you buy a rifle. A 4473, a background check, and you walk out with it. No Form 4, no Form 1, no fingerprints, no waiting and no registry entry.
Here’s why it’s still a myth.
One, it’s enforcement discretion, not law. The National Firearms Act is still on the books. A new Attorney General signs a new letter on day one and the old process is back. The ATF is still running the registry on a voluntary basis, which means it’s sitting there waiting.
Two, the whole thing rests on the zero dollar tax. Congress puts any tax back, even one dollar, and the court’s reasoning goes away with it.
Three, the states. This changes nothing in a state with its own suppressor law. If your state bans them or requires its own registration, you’re still under that law. Know your state before you buy, and know the state you’re driving into.
Me, I’m buying what I want now and I’m keeping every receipt.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
Read your own state’s suppressor law, not a forum post about it.
If you’ve been waiting on a suppressor, stop waiting. Buy now, keep your paperwork and treat the window as a window.
Zero your rifle with the can on.
The video goes through all four guns on camera, so you can hear every one of them for yourself.
