Making My Grandson a Survivor | Our First Wilderness Adventure

I took my 5-year-old grandson DEEP into the Cohutta Wilderness.

This wasn’t just another survival trip

After my conversation with Blackie Thomas about investing in the next generation, I started thinking about my own role in my family. I’ve spent years teaching survival skills to students, viewers and friends—but now it’s time to start passing those skills down to my own children and grandchildren.

My mission was simple: help make my grandson a better version of me.

This is where it starts

We went over his gear, built an emergency shelter, gathered and purified water, hiked through the wilderness identifying wild edibles, medicinal plants and wildlife, processed tinder, kindling and firewood, built a fire, prepared some good meals and even took a Raptor ride through the backcountry.

And, because this is a real survival adventure, things didn’t go exactly according to plan.

On the way out, I lost 4WD in the Jeep. Thankfully, experience kicked in, I gave it “the beans,” and we made it out safely.

The biggest lesson from this trip wasn’t about gear

It was about time.

Skills, knowledge, confidence and experience are things worth passing down—and sometimes the best way to teach them is to get outside and do it together.

This is the beginning of a new chapter for me: Grandfather.

And I couldn’t ask for a better student.

Thanks for watching and being part of the Survival Dispatch family!
