This overnighter turned into something special.
We headed down to Brandon Currin’s homestead - 23 acres of woodland with a solid pond - for an impromptu survival challenge. This time, my son joined us. He’s been out of the survival game for about 10 years, watching channels like Outdoor Boys and wondering if he still “has it.”
We outfitted him with the core 5 C’s of Survivability:
Cutting Tool: BK2 KA-BAR
Combustion Device: Ferro rod
Container: 2-quart Zebra pot
Cover: Military Grabber blanket
Cordage: 550 paracord
Brandon and I used the kits we built at the GA Bushcraft event, and together we:
Built shelters
Procured and filtered water
Started and maintained a long fire
Shared tools, skills, and knowledge
We even had a surprise morale boost when Brandon’s daughter delivered pizza — officially dubbed “Daughter Dash.”
Coming off the Bandana Challenge, Brandon and I were tired — but this overnight wasn’t about us. It was about helping my firstborn succeed, watching his confidence return, and showing how teamwork, mentorship, and shared experience make survival more than just gear.
We laughed, we worked, we taught, and we recharged out there — and I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.
