BLUF

The ground beef in your cart got cheaper on paper and thinner underneath.

On August 21 the White House waived tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef for 90 days, and live cattle futures gapped lower the same morning.

Ranchers holding heifers to rebuild a herd at a 75-year low now have every reason to sell instead. Once those females go on the trailer, the rebuild runs three to five years.

The grocery bill is the small part of this.

When the case looks thin next spring, the animals that would have filled it were sold this month.

I break this down in tonight’s episode. Catch the full panel broadcast below.

INSIDE TONIGHT’S FULL SITREP

Guardians get the mechanics behind the import window, the X your family is standing on, three indicators, and three moves.

  • Origin labels change on the package.

  • Local processing dates slide out.

  • Case lots stop getting restocked.

  • Put 90 days of shelf-stable protein in the pantry this month.

  • Get on a local rancher’s list this week.

  • Learn to read the label before the blend changes.

A reader watching origin labels buys at today’s price. A reader waiting for a headline buys after the swap is already done.

Full breakdown, sources, and the X are below the paywall for Guardians.
