Your power bill went up in June and nobody told you why.
The auction that reserves generation for peak demand went from about twenty-nine dollars a megawatt-day two years ago to three hundred twenty-nine at the price cap. Data center growth drove most of that increase. The cost lands on your account.
Then on July second the same grid set an all-time demand record, breaking a mark that had stood since 2006, and the Energy Department had already signed emergency orders letting the operator cut large customers and waive pollution limits to hold it together.
When the next emergency order comes down, the data centers roll over to their own generators and your house rolls over to nothing.
