BLUF

The FBI, NSA and CISA have documented Chinese state-sponsored intrusions into American critical infrastructure, including energy, water and communications networks. The Volt Typhoon activity was designed to maintain access that could be used during a crisis. That is a documented capability, not proof that a nationwide blackout is scheduled.

The Pentagon’s FORTRESS initiative aims to make military bases less dependent on civilian utilities. It is a resilience plan, not confirmation that an attack is imminent.

For your family, the immediate question is simpler: how long can you manage if power and communications fail in your area?

I break this down in tonight’s episode. Catch the full panel broadcast below.

WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS

A February 2024 joint federal advisory described persistent Chinese access to multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors. The agencies assessed that the activity could support disruption in a future conflict. The advisory did not say every utility had been breached or that attackers could shut down the entire country at once.

Recent reporting on a Massachusetts municipal utility and physical attacks on European power infrastructure shows why small operators and local equipment deserve attention. These cases involve different actors and methods. They do not establish one coordinated campaign.

INSIDE TONIGHT’S GUARDIAN SITREP

The complete Guardian edition examines the documented intrusion, three warning signs worth checking, and practical ways to keep your household functioning during a prolonged outage.

You’ll get the difference between a confirmed breach and a rumor, what to ask your utility, and how to prepare communications, payments and neighborhood contacts before an emergency.
