The attack surface is wider than most Americans grasp. ICS (Industrial Control Systems) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems run the physical machinery of this country - power plants, water treatment, pipeline flow, grid switching. Most of these systems were built decades ago with zero consideration for network security. They were air-gapped once. They are not anymore. Enterprise IT integration has folded them into the same attack surface as corporate email servers.
What makes a coordinated campaign especially dangerous is the persistence mechanism. Adversaries do not break in and immediately detonate. They establish footholds - sometimes sitting inside a network for months - and they manipulate control logic in ways that do not trigger obvious alarms. A substation appears to be functioning. A financial clearing system appears to be processing. Nothing looks wrong until the trigger is pulled and failures cascade faster than any response team can contain.
The FBI and CISA have both confirmed that Iranian-linked groups are actively targeting programmable logic controllers across multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors right now. Chinese state-sponsored groups like Volt Typhoon and APT41 are documented to have infiltrated power grids, telecommunications networks, and federal systems. Technology and financial services together accounted for 44 percent of all breach activity in North America in early 2026. These are not warnings about the future. This is the current battlefield.
