More than two thousand officers were working Berlin on Saturday.
The attack still landed. A van went into a crowd on a park path in the Tiergarten, a few hundred meters outside the protected footprint, and when it hit a tree the driver got out with a machete. One woman was killed. Twenty-nine were injured.
The man behind it was a 21-year-old German citizen, born in Germany, already known to police for multiple crimes, already flagged for radicalization, already carrying a suspended sentence.
The walk in and the walk back to your truck is where your family is actually exposed, and that stretch is the one nobody plans for.
