At 12:45 Sunday morning, someone near RAF Fairford in England called police about three vans heading toward the base. Five British men in their 20s were arrested on explosives and terror charges. By 7 a.m., 85 households were out of their homes. Fairford launches the U.S. B-1 bombers flying against Iran, and Iran has called bases like it fair targets.
The read here is that a threat to a base lands first on the families living beside it.

WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND
Start with the three white vans. A bomb disposal robot worked between them near the base, rear doors open, large black objects on the ground. Police haven’t said what was inside. That part is not settled. (And they were out on bail by Monday afternoon.)
What is confirmed is where police are looking. Counter-terror chief Laurence Taylor said they’re checking whether the men worked for a foreign state, knowingly or not. Russia and Iran have both used hired locals on British soil. And when a base raises its guard, the roads and schools around the gate close with it.
The X is living a few miles from a military base with no plan for a police evacuation at night.
EARLY WARNING INDICATORS
Strange vans parked near the fence. Contractors and hunters use back roads every day. The signal is the same unmarked vans coming back on different nights near the fence or under the flight path, with nobody getting out. Catch it early and your call reaches police while the van is still there.
Bomb squad trucks on your street. A wreck closes a road for an hour. A bomb squad truck plus officers knocking on doors is a different event, and in Whelford it kept families out all night. The first truck you see gives you a head start before the roads jam.
Lines backing up at the gate. An inspection or a holiday slows the gate for a day. Full ID checks, new concrete barriers and a line that stays long for several days mean the base raised its guard. That night, fuel the car and check your bag.
