BLUF

Your truck has a travel history you never agreed to.

Flock Safety runs more than 120,000 cameras across 49 states, recording roughly 20 billion plate scans a month. On August 13 the company made anti-abuse controls mandatory after reporting found around 50 officers charged or accused of using plate readers to track women. A search still runs on a typed case number. No judge sees it.

More than 50 communities canceled or refused contracts this year, and the network grew anyway.

Your drive to the gun shop and your drive to a doctor’s appointment are rows in a database any participating agency can query.

I break this down in tonight’s episode. Catch the full panel broadcast below.

INSIDE TONIGHT’S FULL SITREP

Guardians get the mechanics of the vehicle fingerprint, the X your family is standing on, three indicators, and three moves.

  • New poles appear at your entrances.

  • A camera contract lands on the consent agenda.

  • Your plate turns up in search logs.

  • Map the readers on the roads you actually drive.

  • Pull the search history on your own plate.

  • Read your county’s contract before the renewal vote.

A reader who knows where the readers sit and what his county signed can act at the renewal vote. Everyone else finds out afterward.

Full breakdown, sources, and the X are below the paywall for Guardians.
