This week the federal government stood up a new AI-driven cyber defense system and described it, in its own words, as a wartime footing. Read that plainly. Washington doesn’t rebuild its defensive architecture around artificial intelligence because it might matter someday. It rebuilds because adversaries are already using AI against American infrastructure, and officials have admitted hostile actors are inside critical networks right now, waiting. The defense of your power, your water, and your bank just moved to machine speed, which means the attacks already run at machine speed. When both sides fight in milliseconds, your family will learn about the losing exchanges as outages, frozen card readers, and statements about technical issues. The layer you control is the manual one, and this weekend is the time to build it.

Here’s what actually changed. A June executive order called for an AI-enabled clearinghouse to find and fix software vulnerabilities across critical infrastructure, and this week it went operational, run by Treasury with CISA and the Department of War at the table, wired into the software providers and infrastructure operators that keep the country running. Frontier AI now scans, prioritizes, and coordinates patching at a speed no human team can match.
Ask why. Senior energy officials say hackers are already inside critical infrastructure networks, lying in wait. Iran-linked actors have targeted the controllers that run power and water systems, and a Russian-linked wiper attack nearly crippled part of Poland’s grid last winter through a handful of exposed devices. Machine-speed defense exists because machine-speed attack arrived first, and every one of those contested systems ends at something in your house, the breaker panel, the tap, the card reader.

EARLY WARNING INDICATORS
Emergency directives on short deadlines. When federal agencies order systems patched or disconnected in days instead of months, that’s the tempo of the fight surfacing in public paperwork. Directives are dated and deadline-stamped, so the pace is measurable from your kitchen table. Tracking that tempo tells you when to tighten your household posture weeks before anything hits the news.
Vague incident notices from your providers. Your bank, utility, or pharmacy announcing a technical issue with no details is the civilian-facing residue of a contested network.
