The attack you’re braced for took 19 men on four planes, after years of planning, and landed on one morning. It needed a command structure overseas.
The replacement fits in a hotel room. On September 12 the FBI stopped a 21-year-old outside a hotel in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and seized a rifle and about 190 rounds. That’s the sixth ISIS-linked case in America this year. The fifth came 24 days earlier, in Albany.
There won’t be a big day.

WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND…
Two doctrines, and they hand you two different jobs. The spectacular model gave the government years of seams to find: travel, money, flight schools, calls overseas. What’s confirmed in the Kramer complaint runs the other way. A burner phone, a black bag, a hotel room and a gun counter, all on one Saturday. Agents had a tip from March.
FBI Director Patel told the Senate on September 15 that homegrown extremists are the top international terror threat, with 109 arrests this year. The read here: a swarm never hands the country one terrible day. Each case is local news for 48 hours, so nobody hardens your grocery store. (Congress doesn’t hold hearings about a Saturday in Butler County.)
The X is the big-day picture in your head, because it keeps your family’s guard up at the airport and down at the places you go every week.
EARLY WARNING INDICATORS
Your grocery store posts a guard. A uniformed guard at the entrance of a store that never had one, facing the lot. One store is a shoplifting problem. Three chains in your town inside a month is a threat briefing, and you start shopping the slow hours.
Church side doors stay locked. Ushers lock every door but the front once service starts. One Sunday is a broken latch. When it holds for a month and the school gym does the same, leadership got briefed, and you learn which locked doors still open from inside.
Bleed kits hang beside the AED. A red bleeding-control kit shows up on the wall at your gym or your church. A grant explains one. Several buildings plus a staff training date tells you local leaders are planning for the first minutes alone, and now you know where the kit is.
Guardians get tonight’s three moves: the dinner-table rule, the $30 item for every door pocket, and the 911 check that takes five minutes.
