First, you need to develop genuine situational awareness, not the phone-zombie mindset that dominates our culture. When you’re at the mall, identify all exits immediately. Know where cover and concealment are located. Understand the difference - cover stops bullets, concealment just hides you. Pay attention to people who seem out of place or are conducting surveillance. Terrorists rehearse their attacks, which means there are observable pre-incident indicators if you’re paying attention. Second, get serious about your defensive capabilities. If you’re not already carrying concealed, start today. Get proper training - not just shooting paper targets, but realistic scenario-based training that prepares you for the chaos of an active threat situation. Keep a medical kit in your vehicle and know how to use it. Bleeding out is the number one preventable cause of death in mass casualty events. Third, have a communications plan with your family. When cell networks get overloaded during a crisis, how will you reach each other? Establish rally points and redundant communication methods. Fourth, maintain at least 30 days of food, water, and essential supplies at home. When multiple coordinated attacks hit simultaneously, supply chains will be disrupted immediately. Stock trauma supplies and get trained in tactical emergency casualty care. Create hardened safe rooms in your homes where family members can retreat and defend if necessary. Most importantly, cultivate the warrior mindset. The average American has been so softened by comfort and convenience that they’re psychologically unprepared for violence. You need to mentally rehearse scenarios, work through decision trees, and steel yourself for the possibility that you may have to take a life to protect innocent lives. This isn’t about paranoia - it’s about being the kind of man who stands between evil and the defenseless when nobody else will.
