At the same time, the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan never got cleaned up, and al-Qaeda is right back operating training camps there under Taliban protection. Seasoned analysts, including folks from the Soufan Center and West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center, are warning that these two collapsed regimes have handed global jihad a second wind. ISIS-K out of Afghanistan is the most aggressive franchise right now, pulling in fighters from Central Asia and even plotting overseas. In Syria, hardline splinters from HTS and foreign fighter battalions could break away and go full bore on external attacks. Add in the thousands of detained ISIS fighters who could bust loose, and you have the ingredients for coordinated, multi-city strikes on soft targets in America and Europe. Our borders are still porous, online radicalization is through the roof, and counter-terrorism budgets keep getting squeezed for other priorities. This isn’t fearmongering; it’s pattern recognition from men who have spent decades tracking these networks. Prayer is our foundation, but awareness is the watchman’s duty on the wall. The enemy hasn’t gone moderate; he has just been handed new territory to regroup.
