The threat picture has changed and the response posture for everyday Americans needs to change with it. This is not abstract geopolitics. Lone actors radicalized through social media propaganda and dormant sleeper assets embedded inside American neighborhoods represent a real and present danger, and there are concrete actions you can take right now to harden your family’s security posture.
Know what a soft target actually is. Shopping malls, grocery stores, churches, concert venues, outdoor markets, transit hubs, sporting events - anywhere civilians gather in numbers with limited security and open access. That is the operational environment our adversaries are studying. Start thinking about every location you visit through that same lens.
Conduct your own pre-entry threat assessment. Before you walk into any crowded location, take thirty seconds to identify the exits, locate the nearest hard cover, and note anything or anyone that stands out as out of place. This is not paranoia - it is what trained operators do automatically. Build the habit until it is second nature.
Communicate an emergency action plan with your family. Every adult and older teen in your household should know the rally point if communications go down, the bug-out route out of your area, and the protocol for reaching each other if cell towers are overwhelmed during a mass casualty event. Practice it. Do not assume everyone knows what to do.
Establish a 72-hour get-home bag for every vehicle. If a coordinated attack disrupts transportation infrastructure across multiple cities simultaneously, you may not be driving home. A bag with water, calories, a map, a first aid kit, and communication tools is a baseline investment that costs almost nothing relative to its value when you need it.
Stay alert to behavioral indicators. The Paris attacks in 2015 and the 9/11 network both involved observable pre-attack surveillance. People taking photos of security positions, lingering without purpose near entrances, or conducting what appears to be route reconnaissance are patterns worth reporting. Use the See Something, Say Something infrastructure - it exists for a reason.
Reduce your digital footprint. Extremist propaganda networks use social media to identify and target high-value symbolic individuals. Posting your location, your routine, your church, your children’s school, or your security setup in real time is operational intelligence gifted to any actor watching.
Stay spiritually ready. Fear has no power over a person anchored in their faith. Psalm 91 was not written for comfortable times. Train, prepare, and trust that God placed you where you are for a reason.
