The threat of Iranian-linked sleeper cells activating inside the United States is not a theoretical exercise anymore. It is a live operational concern being tracked at the highest levels of American law enforcement and intelligence. Here is what you need to be doing right now.
Raise your situational awareness immediately. Sleeper operatives are designed to look ordinary. They hold jobs, blend into communities, and display no obvious threat indicators until they receive the signal to move. You will not spot them by looking for someone suspicious. You spot them by knowing your neighborhood well enough to notice what changes.
Know the attack profiles. Historical Iranian and Hezbollah-linked operations in the West have included targeted shootings, vehicle attacks, bombings of soft targets, and assassinations. The Austin bar shooting on March 1st, where the suspect was wearing Iranian flag imagery, is a real-world example of how quickly a lone actor or activated asset can create mass casualties with little warning.
Monitor federal alerts and local law enforcement channels. FBI Director Kash Patel has already mobilized counterterrorism teams nationwide. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has confirmed direct coordination with federal intelligence partners. If your local fusion center or law enforcement puts out an alert, treat it seriously.
Harden your soft targets. Houses of worship, Jewish community centers, schools, and public gathering spaces are historically the first targets in Iranian-linked retaliation campaigns. Establish a communication plan that does not depend on the internet or cellular infrastructure. Iran has active cyber capabilities and has already demonstrated the ability to disrupt digital infrastructure. If those networks go down, you need to know how to reach your family and your community.
