BLUF

On the night of October 11 somebody logged into the refrigeration controllers at hundreds of French supermarkets and turned the cold cases into ovens. Fridges at Intermarché, Carrefour, Coopérative U and Monoprix ran up to 122 degrees for about six hours. Food spoiled by the ton, a few stores caught fire, the chains lost tens of millions. The next morning Ahold Delhaize, which owns Stop & Shop, Food Lion, Hannaford and Giant, pulled its systems offline for a security incident. Nobody has tied the two together. Nobody needs to. Your store’s cold aisle runs on the same kind of panel.

Do nothing and your Friday grocery run ends at a taped-off meat case, a dead loyalty card and a pharmacy counter that can’t pull up your prescription.

INSIDE TONIGHT’S FULL SITREP

Guardians get the three moves that keep your family fed when the cold chain and the checkout go down together.

  • Build a 72-hour pantry that needs no refrigerator.

  • Keep the chest freezer full and put a thermometer in it.

  • Put a second grocer on your route that isn’t the big chain.

The family with these moves eats dinner the night the cold cases die while everyone waits at a lane that can’t scan.

The three moves are below the paywall for Guardians.

WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND

Your meat case has an IP address. The refrigeration panels can be reached over the internet. In France the attackers used that door, set the defrost cycle from one hour to eight so no alarm fired, and let the cases warm overnight. The object to remember is a defrost timer turned up to eight hours.

One vendor’s controllers ran the cold aisles in every chain hit, so one way in reached hundreds of stores. That’s confirmed. What’s assessed is the next link: the same controller brands sit in American stores, and nobody has a fix because CERT-FR hasn’t named the hole.

Spoiled stock in 300 stores pulls the regional warehouse into replacement mode, and the stores that weren’t hacked get shorted on the next truck. Ahold Delhaize’s own memo warned Food Lion stores to expect trouble staging and handing off orders. (Six hours of warm air. That’s all it took.)

The X is a week’s worth of food that lives in somebody else’s refrigerator.

EARLY WARNING INDICATORS

Cold case taped off at noon. Tape across the meat or dairy case and the shelves cleared. One case is a dead compressor. Every cold case dark while the deli runs, or two stores of one chain the same day, is the controller, and you know before the chain admits it.

Loyalty price won’t load at checkout. The app is down and the cashier can’t pull your card. An app update looks the same for an hour. Paired with pickup and delivery suspended, it’s an attack, you pay full price until it ends, and cash keeps you moving.

Pharmacy counter can’t fill the script. The pharmacy says the system is down. A local outage clears by evening. The same chain’s pharmacy and fuel pumps down together means the whole network is off, and catching it day one gets your refills to an independent before the line forms.

Tonight’s three moves give you food that needs no cold case, two days of freezer time and a second store that runs on different equipment.

Stop here and the next taped-off meat case is your dinner plan. Seven-day free trial.
