In the last week of July, cyber intrusions hit water systems in at least seven states, with more than 30 Minnesota utilities compromised in one coordinated wave. Plants dropped to manual operations and boil-water notices went up while the FBI, EPA, and CISA scrambled response crews. Washington’s lead suspect is Iran, and the attribution isn’t signed yet. Nobody fired a shot. Somebody reached through the internet, took the controls of American drinking water, and proved a warning the federal government has published in writing since 2023.
